Have you ever thought about discovering a new dimension?

“If you can dream it, you can do it!” claimed Walt Disney.

And he was right! The 3D graphics overcomes the technical limits of two-dimensional images, allowing you to recreate realistic settings for your products in different sectors and market niches.

So let’s take a closer look at what exactly 3D graphics are, their strengths and areas. Let’s get started!

What is 3D graphics?

I The great success of 3D is mainly linked to the world of video games, and is a branch of graphic design that grows in a way that can be said to be symbiotic with technological development of computers. This technique allows you to obtain images with much more information and is able to communicate much more detail to the viewer.

As already said initially it has great fame in the field of game design , but it is also gaining ground in other areas such as web design, in motion graphics , in the creation of brand identity or visuals for events / advertising companions, and much more.

But let’s analyze better the main areas in which 3D graphics can be applied.

Character design

One of the areas in which 3D graphics is certainly increasingly present today, so much so that it has become the standard in the field of animated feature films , is that of Character Design.

In particular, in this field, 3D is used to create mascots or in general characters that allow you to best personify a brand.

An example worth mentioning is the one created by Clim Studio for Logitech. Go and see it!

Render of products

With 3D graphics you can create products that must be placed on the market, or must be approved by a customer, before fully producing them: in this way you have the possibility a priori to see with absolute accuracy how the object in question will be realized in reality.

With 3D you can create a product that does not yet exist: such as an innovative shoe model, a particular mechanical piece or a new appliance.

A three-dimensional product is simple and easily understandable even by non-experts: it is possible to see at a glance any design errors right away and correct them without problems in the prototyping phase and improves communication between the client and the graphic designer, as it is much more direct and easier to understand the product in 3D.

Motion Design

3D graphics lend themselves very well to use in motion design and animation, just think of the animated feature films made by < span style = "text-decoration: underline;"> Pixar and Dreamworks , produced using this technique.

But when we talk about animation we don’t have to think only of the great 3D animation films . Animation also means small effects or movements that attract attention to a scene where a product is represented, for example a bag, on which a movement is staged that highlights a peculiar feature.

Game design

3D modeling

The 3D modeling has now become fundamental , both for the creation of the characters and the settings.

The techniques are numerous and also very different from each other : ‌ starting from the photorealistic settings of the latest generation video games up to much more stylized results in indie games .

Photorealistic views

The 3D graphics today allows us to create incredibly photorealistic images, allowing a rendering of the image integrating it with the post-production technique and photo insertion.

Two areas in which these skills are in great demand are certainly architecture and product design.

Icon design

3D graphic

Today in icon design there is greater use of 3D , especially if you move in the digital world, such as within applications or websites . In fact, in these contexts there is the possibility to animate the different elements , and this allows for more captivating icons.

A perfect example is the eclectic and colorful emoji from Microsoft.

Illustration

Last but not least is the 3D technique used in the illustrative field .

A 3D artist who uses this approach in a very interesting way is Mathieu Le Berre : in his works textures and forced perspectives he creates incredibly detailed and complex worlds.

Perspective, lighting and surface finishes are used to add detail to the scenes in the three-dimensional illustrations.

Conclusions

We have seen how 3D is a versatile tool with extraordinary power capable of perfectly combining technique, creativity and emotionality.

I remind you that 3D design is one of this year’s trends, as it was planned for the previous year. I leave you the article reference in case you missed it. 😉

As always, I ask you to let me know in the comments if you have found my explanation on the subject useful and if I have forgotten any important notions.

Until next time!
